Shaughnessy is centrally located in Vancouver and is a prestigious area with a lot of heritage. It is named after former president of CP Railway, Thomas Shaughnessy. There are many large and historical homes (over 50% built before world war II). CPR commissioned Frederick Todd and M.Davick (engineer) to lay out the curving streets and large lots and sidewalks. They ensured exclusivity with a minimum house build cost that was 6 times the norm in Vancouver.

Prestigious neighbourhood

The character of Shaughnessy is shaped by the streets, sidewalks and grand houses with styles like Edwardian, Tudor, Classical, Craftsman. Many restorations involved architectural projects to maintain the history and character of the homes. During the Depression in 1930s many homeowners left Shaughnessy and many of the homes were converted to rooming houses and multple-dwelling conversions. In the 1970s Vancouver city planning started to rezone to smaller 60-75 foot wide lots. Developers must now adhere to Shaughnessy Official Development Plan to protect the character of the neighbourhood.

Central location

Although primarily a residential area, there are shopping areas near its borders including Arbutus Village, Oakridge mall, street shopping along Oak street, and the large mix of stores in South Granville. Finally 41st Ave also offers a large number of amenities and restaurants.
